11 Million Dots

________________________________________

111 Million Dots is a landmark public artwork that transforms the façade of a data centre in Park Royal, London into a monument to local voices, memories, and sound. In a city where individual stories are often lost in the noise, the project acts as a soundboard—capturing and preserving the everyday life of its surroundings.

Commissioned by Vantage Data Centers and created by artist Rafael El Baz, the six-storey façade of the LHR21 campus becomes both canvas and archive. Over 150 people contributed to the project through interviews, workshops and sound walks, resulting in 20 hours of audio—ranging from conversations and industrial noise to personal stories and ambient soundscapes.

This audio was translated using custom software into a pattern of 11 million perforations in the building’s aluminium cladding. Referencing musical notation and data systems, the design mirrors the tones of the sky and neighbouring park, subtly shifting with the light.

Launching in September 2025, visitors can access the full sound archive via QR codes in the park, creating a lasting digital record of the community. As the UK’s largest permanent public artwork, 11 Million Dots reframes the data centre as a shared memory device—where local sound becomes a source of connection, meaning, and place.

The project goes live in September 2025.
